THE TRUCE FAMILY LEGACY

Truce was founded by Thomas C. Smith, a direct descendant of the Hatfield family. Tom was raised in the shadow of the Pawpaw Trees in the very county where the McCoy family lived out their days. Along the Tug Fork these mountains became the setting for one of the most famous conflicts in American history, the Hatfield-McCoy feud. Often remembered as a fight over a pig, the truth was a decades-long struggle shaped by the Civil War, politics, and loyalties that divided families on both sides. Over time those divisions gave way to reconciliation. Hatfields and McCoys found common ground, shared good whiskey, and built friendships where there was once conflict. Truce honors that history while raising a glass to the peace that followed.

THE FEUD

The Hatfield-McCoy feud remains one of the most storied rivalries in American history. Lasting nearly 30 years, the two families clashed along the rugged hills of the West Virginia and Kentucky border. Led by William Anderson “Devil Anse” Hatfield and Randolph “Ole Ran’l” McCoy, the conflict grew far beyond a simple dispute and was fueled by Civil War loyalties, land conflicts, pride, and revenge. What unfolded along the Tug Fork became national news and a lasting symbol of how deep family grudges can shape generations.

JOHNSE HATFIELD

At the heart of the story was Thomas Smith’s ancestor, Johnse Hatfield, whose relationship with Roseanna McCoy was both passionate and tragic. Their romance briefly united the two families, but it ultimately unraveled under the pressure of loyalty and legacy. Johnse’s later involvement in the violent 1888 attack on the McCoy cabin led to heartbreak, arrests, and lasting scars on both sides.

THE TRUCE LEGACY

Despite that troubled past, the name “Johnson” continues through generations of Smiths. Thomas named his oldest son after Johnse, not to glorify conflict, but to remember where they came from and to build something better. Truce is a call to pause, reflect, share a glass, and drink to our heritage, however complicated, hard fought, and deeply rooted it may be.
